Simple Puppy Training Techniques

Although dogs can learn at any age, the critical learning period for a puppy is up to 16 weeks. It is important during this time to implement positive puppy training techniques. Below you will find some simple puppy training techniques to help your puppy adjust and become a happy and well-behaved dog.

Positive Reinforcement: This method of training is an important training technique. Using positive reinforcement means rewarding your puppy for good behavior. Such rewards can include: clicker training followed by a food reward and affection as a reward such as giving the puppy praise. Positive reinforcement makes a puppy feel secure, happy, and loved. Punishing your puppy or using negative reinforcement techniques will only cause the puppy to be afraid and act aggressive.

Dealing with Unwanted Behavior: It is important not to punish bad behaviour such as pulling on the leash, jumping on you, and barking. For instance, if your puppy is pulling you when walking, stop and stand there until it stops. Once the pulling stops, give the puppy a treat and continue your walk. Clicker training is a positive reinforcement training technique that rewards a puppy that behaves well. The “click” sound acknowledges the good behavior. The “click” sound is made as soon as the puppy performs the desired behavior. Right after the “click” sound, you can reward your puppy with a treat.

Simple Commands: To teach your puppy to sit, position him or her in front of you. With a treat in your hand, let the puppy smell it. Move the treat from his nose and draw your hand forward so that the treat is almost directly above its head. It will have to sit down to reach it. Don't hold the treat too high. As soon as the hind end rests on the floor, praise generously and give the puppy the treat. Repeat often.

Desensitize: Your puppy needs to become desensitized to new environments. Take the puppy for short walks through the neighborhood to get use to new noises, people, other dogs, cars, and other sights. To make sure your puppy become an aggressive adult dog, socialize the puppy with children and dogs at a very young age. When the puppy is playing with other dogs and children, praise and reward with a treat when the puppy behaves well. Children should gently pat the puppy to reduce fear.

Driving in a Car: A car drive can be an unpleasant experience for a puppy. They can drool, vomit, or urinate. Put familiar items in the car with the puppy such as its favorite toys and blanket. Take it for a short drive at first and then gradually make the drive longer.

It is wise to take your puppy to puppy training classes as these classes really help with teaching people how to properly train their dogs. The reward of properly training your puppy is a well behaved and happy life long friend.
